Five Midland PGA pros including the secretary of the region will swap lush fairways for hard roads when they take part in the BUPA Great Birmingham Run next month.
The quintet, led by James Brown, will tackle the half marathon on Sunday, October 20, and are hoping to raise £5,000 for Cure Leukaemia.
Also pounding the streets will be Notts Golf Club’s Michael Bradley (pictured above), Rufford Park Golf Centre’s John Vaughan, Glen Gorse’s Dominic Fitzpatrick and Hinckley assistant Mark Pegg.
Brown, a swimmer by choice when it comes to fitness, has been hampered by injury in his preparations and while he isn’t set to make a splash when it comes to a fast time, is determined to finish the testing course that winds through the city.
“I think for two or three of us it will probably be a case of just making sure we finish, even if it’s on hands and knees, but Michael (Bradley) is a good runner and Mark (Pegg) is running another one in the build up so I expect they will be sub two hours,” said Brown.
“I’m normally a swimmer rather than a runner and my training has been restricted but the most important thing is that we are raising money for Cure Leukaemia and the important research work they carry out in saving lives and finding a cure for the illness.
“I have never been a runner, however, having visited their offices and met some of their patients who have beaten the terrible disease I wanted to do what I could to help.”
