Former European Tour regular Robert Coles (Maylands) mastered the conditions to finish top of the pile in qualifying for the Weston Homes Bishop’s Stortford Classic.
On a day of high winds at The Hertfordshire, Coles showed his class in shooting a one-over-par 71.
Low scoring was never going to be on the cards as the East of England experienced another blustery day.
But Coles still recorded three birdies in leading home the 14 qualifiers for the year’s first Order of Merit, which will be staged at Bishop’s Stortford on June 3-4.
The most extraordinary story of the day centred around Laurence Allen (Verulam). Not only did he eagle the par-five 5th hole, but he also aced the 189-yard 11th hole.
Allen would eventually share fifth spot in safely progressing to the Weston Homes Bishop’s Stortford Classic. All those who shot 75 or better made it through.
