Ben Clayton shot a sizzling seven-under-par 135 to win The PGA in Surrey Championship at Cuddington GC and take the £1,000 top prize.

The Hindhead man won by one shot from Grant Guerin (World of Golf), while Andy Raitt (St. George’s Hill) and David Callaway (Milford) tied in third place.

After a first round of 69, Clayton was three strokes off the lead set by Chris Gane with a 66, but he delivered a magical back nine performance in the second round to claim the championship. One-under-par at the turn, he charged through the back nine with birdies on the 10th, 12th, 13th and 17th to equal the lowest round of the day.

In the other PGA in Surrey tournaments, Torie Blakemore (Merrist Wood) won the The PGA in Surrey Assistants & Trainees Championship at Guildford GC after a play off. Blakemore shot a superb 67 in the second round to tie with Ben St. John (Woodcote Park) on 136, and his play off performance resulted in a handsome and well deserved winner’s cheque for £555.

Stuart Hill (Richmond Park) won The PGA in Surrey Seniors Championship to claim the £500 top prize, while David Baillie (Dulwich & Sydenham Hill) won £200 for his winning performance in The PGA in Surrey Super Seniors Championship at the delightful yet challenging Sunningdale Ladies GC.

Sam Smith, county secretary of The PGA in Surrey was delighted with the number of competitors that played and the quality of the golf. He commented: “The players at these four events competed for nearly £10,000 in prize money, which surpasses the prize funds of any other counties for similar events, and offers the members of The PGA in Surrey very attractive tournament opportunities.

“What is even more impressive is that most of this prize money was raised through the annual dinner back in February this year. The next one is lined up for February 2014 at Epsom, hopefully with the same format of three shotgun starts at West Hill, Woking and Worplesdon.”

With a confirmed prize fund of £5,000 the new 36 hole The PGA in Surrey Masters is on Monday 16 September at Woodcote Park GC. The entry fee is only £50 and there are still spaces left, so please call The PGA in Surrey office on 01483 224200 to register your entry.
