Burnham and Berrow touring professional Lee Corfield won his first Gloucester and Somerset PGA medal as a pro with a four-under-par round of 66 at Isle of Wedmore.

Although he once tasted success as an amateur, his decisive first win this season left Total Triumph Order of Merit winner Giuseppe Licata (Bristol Golf Centre) five shots adrift in the final 18 hole event of the year played in a mixture of sunshine, rain and wind.

Corfield opened slowly but came alive with a quartet of consecutive birdie threes from the fifth followed by a par three at the ninth to be out in 31. The trio of par fives on Wedmore’s back nine brought further success for the big hitting Somerset man.

He birdied the 13th, parred the next and made an eagle at the tough 15th.

Playing back into the teeth of the now strong wind he bludgeoned his way in two shots over the 545-yards as the only player to reach the green in two.

His dropped shot at the closing par-three was irrelevant as no else could match or beat par on the day. Five birdies and an eagle added the birdie sweep to his winnings.

Licata’s steady card included four birdies, three bogeys and a double third for yet another top three finish.

Burnham Golf Range’s Graeme Biggs produced his best result of the season to share place with Cirencester’s Ed Goodwin and amateur Nigel Gravell. Goodwin and Gravell shared the Over 40’s sweep.

Goodwin took advantage of George Ryall’s absence to secure second place in the rankings ahead of the season ending Total Triumph 36-hole Strokeplay Championship at Filton. Ryall, captain Nick Ellis, chairman Andrew March, Robin Goodey, Ashley Mansell and David Haines are in contention for the next four places.
