Top Cornish pair Richard O'Hanlon (The Point at Polzeath) and Richard Sadler (Killiow) are relishing the prospect of returning to Exeter Golf and Country Club next week to take part in the inaugural Skycaddie PGA England & Wales Inter-County championship after success in the club’s 37th annual charity pro-am.
They represent their county and must be favourites after O’Hanlon (pictured) notched his best win of the season with a four-under-par 65. Sadler carded 67 to share third with Giuseppe Licata Bristol Golf Centre with Padbrook Park’s Stuart Disney in second on 66.
It was Devon Order of Merit winner Disney’s best result of the season as well and he achieved a personal milestone. “This is the first time in my career I have completed a round without a five on my card,” he said.
He made four birdies and the only blemish was a bogey four at the 16th.
O’Hanlon made his first par at the fifth, after two birdies and two bogeys. Three birdies in succession from the eighth and two more over the three closing holes, sandwiched between a bogey on the 16th, completed his round.
Sadler made four birdies on the front nine which was marred by a double bogey at the fifth. He returned in even par after a bogey at the 13th followed immediately by a birdie. Licata was faultless making birdies at the second and 14th and 16 pars.
Chris Gill (Newquay), returning to his original club, and Stuart Little (Minchinhampton New) were the only other players to break par and shared fifth on 68.
The Moorland Fuels team of Ben Moore, Abbie Turner and Debbie Moore, led by James Pickard (Honiton), won the team prize on 17-under-par 121.
The Jones Lang Laselle team of Quin Payne-Cook, David Slee and Tony Cockayne, headed by Nick Horrocks (Staddon Heights), were four behind in second, beating Sadler’s IS Morris Plumbing team of Iain Morris, Chris Jelley and Wayne Chant on countback.
