Talented young PGA Professionals from across Great Britain & Ireland are set to tee up in Coventry for the prestigious Galvin Green PGA Assistants’ Championship final.
The £32,500 tournament, open to assistant PGA Professionals undertaking their training, will head to Coventry Golf Club on August 5-7.
Finalist from last year Fred Jewsbury (Stratford on Avon) and Bedlingtonshire’s Matthew Webb, winner of the regional qualifier at The Warwickshire, will be among the cohort from the Midlands taking their place in a 120-strong field in pursuit of the silverware.
Alongside the £5000 first prize the winner will also secure a place in the PGA Play-Offs in Turkey, as well as a trip Down Under for the PGA Australian Futures Championship and a four-day trip to Sweden during which they will be given a tour of Galvin Green’s head offices.
The championship, won last year by Sheffield’s Gareth Davies in a nail-biting play-off, is being held at Coventry for the third consecutive time.
Matthew Cort made history at the West Midlands venue in 2013 by becoming the first man ever to win the PGA Assistants’ Championship, which pre-dates the US Masters having been first held in 1930, on three occasions.
But this year’s winner will also follow in the footsteps of the likes of Tony Jacklin and Peter Alliss who are both past champions of this event.
Mike Johnson-Hill, managing director of Galvin Green UK, said: “Galvin Green is proud to be associated with such a long-standing and valued event and keen to support the younger generation of PGA Professionals who are so important to the future of the game.”
"The popularity of this event among aspiring PGA Professionals is great to see and we are delighted to be playing a small part in their progression in the game.”
Other players from the Midlands competing at Coventry include: Adam Keogh (Spalding), David Salisbury (Three Rivers), Jamie Carney (Robin Hood), Robert Bardsley (Moor Hall), Oliver Booth (Scraptoft), and Michael Reed (Glen Gorse).
