South Staffs Golf Club duo, PGA Professional Matt Jacques (above) and his amateur partner Luke Ryan, won the latest leg of the Brabazon Series at The Belfry by the narrowest of margins.
The pair’s negotiation of the four-time stage for the Ryder Cup, the resort’s Brabazon Course, resulted in them amassing 41 Stableford points to claim the £400 first prize.
That left them a point clear of a trio comprising Glengorse Golf Club PGA pro Michael Reed and his amateur partner from Birstall Golf Club, Dan Bacon; PGA pros Matt McGuire from Little Lakes and Halfpenny Green’s Mark Sparrow; and Birstall Golf Club pair, PGA pro Jon Williamson and amateur Bruce Smith.
Reed and Bacon are the reigning champions but their bid to retain the title appears a lost cause despite their fine performance in the penultimate of the six-tournament series supported by Cheltenham-based Sibling Gin.
Lying third in the Order of Merit, they trail series leaders Vasilis Tsakakis and Ian Hay, amateurs from Kenilworth and Hinckley Golf Clubs respectively by almost 250 points.
And with one event remaining – on April 7 – and 270 points going to the winning pair, Reed and Bacon would have to win it and hope Tsakakis and Hay do not play.
Similarly, Ramsdale Park Golf Club amateurs Casey Harper and Aidan Johnsey who lie second are 210 points adrift of the leaders and their chances of pipping them for victory appear remote.
