Englishman Mathew Webb already has his sights on a bid to win the final after triumphing at the Galvin Green PGA Assistants’ Championship Scottish qualifier at Craigielaw Golf Club.

Webb, of Northumberland’s Bedlington Golf Club, is keen to make up for his performance in last year’s event when he won the qualifying event but missed the cut in the final by one shot.

The second year PGA Assistant was again top of the leaderboard in this year’s qualifier held at the East Lothian course.

Webb won by two shots on a day where windy conditions tested the players’ ability to the limit, and he was the only competitor to go under par for the day.

Webb carded a one-under-par round of 70 to move ahead of a four way tie for second spot.

Samuel Binning (Mearns Castle Golf Academy), Paul O'Hara  Clydeway Golf, Marc Owenson (Gullane Golf Club) and Rodger Clarke (Golf Dedication Centre) all finished one over par.

They will join 12 other qualifiers for the £32,000 grand final to be held at Little Aston Golf Club near Birmingham from August 3-5.

“This is the one I want to go out and win now,” said Webb.

“I played well last year and won 10 events, but when it came to the Assistants’ final I missed the cut.

“So I want to go back and try and make up for that. It’s a prestige event and leads to other things if I can win. I’ll have to make sure I play good golf this time but that’s my incentive. It’s within my reach.”

Webb’s winning round contained seven birdies, but he also made four bogeys and a double bogey at the 12th hole.

“Controlling the flight of the ball was a must in that wind, the course asked a lot of your game,” he said.

“I may have been the only one under par but anyone could have done that, but just one hole could set you back. That’s why I had to keep going for birdies because I knew I’d make some bogeys.

“It was a fantastic course but being right by the sea it meant it was going to be very different. Little Aston will obviously be a different type of course but I want to do better this time.”
