One late mistake cost Adam Curtis outright victory after a superb display in the second Titleist and FootJoy Sprint Series event at Weston-super-Mare.
The 22-year-old Bude assistant was heading for a solo success until he dropped his only shot on the dog-leg par-five 17th hole where an out-of-bounds area catches a wayward shot. But six birdies were enough to join old adversary James Ruth (China Fleet) at the top of the leaderboard.
It was the third year trainee’s first win and follows a tie for fourth in the Sprint opener at Radyr the previous week. He is now on the way to claim one of five sponsorship packages.
The experienced Ruth, who once played in Europe, was one of two players to return faultless cards on a dry but cold day at the seaside links. His first birdie came at the eighth but he added four more on the way home including three in the closing four holes.
Barnstaple-born Curtis was six under after 15 holes and made nine threes in his five-under 65.
Ross Langdon (Brickhampton Court) was the other flawless player with four birdies. He was joined on 66 by Toby Hunt (St Mellons) who made five but dropped a shot on the ninth and Rhys Evans (Celtic Manor) who held a share of the lead after 17 holes with five birdies but was denied a share of top spot when he bogeyed the last.
First out Daniel Toogood from the host club posted 67 and was joined by Richard Bentham (Hensol Golf Academy), Greg Davies (South Cerney), Ryan Pope (Exeter) and newcomer Jamie Amor, son of the Marlborough Golf Club professional.
The third round of the five-leg Series which aims to give assistants and young professionals under 30 greater playing opportunities is at Minehead on May 2.
