Dan Guy returned to the club where he played his amateur golf to win the Devon PGA medal at Churston in only his second appearance in a PGA event.
The 18-year-old former two-handicap Devon and South West squad amateur, who signed with Torbay Golf Range owner Neil Holman this month, shot three-under par to share top spot with Tom Jessamine (Woodbury Park).
Guy, who had been working at seasoned PGA pro Holman’s developing complex for a while, shot 76 on his debut at Tiverton and produced solid rounds in two Devon Alliance meetings as well.
He made seven birdies, including three twos, but a fourth bogey five at the final hole prevented the Paignton teenager taking an outright victory.
The promising Jessamine dropped his only shot at the second hole but added four birdies and returned in three-under 33 for the back nine.
Another young player Andrew Place (East Devon) was one shot behind in third on his first outing of the winter season. Veteran Barry Austin (Downes Crediton) and recently-appointed Teign Valley professional Mark Hurst shared fourth on 71 followed by Devon PGA secretary Christian Vine, Dan Hendriksen and another Torbay Golf Centre assistant Harry Mayers.
