Kent’s Sophie Daws admitted her first WPGA One Day series victory was a huge confidence boost.

Folkestone-based Daws, representing PGolfCoaching@Etchinghill, finished top of a strong field to win the third round of the series at Three Rivers Golf Club In Essex.

It was a major leap forwards for Daws who admitted that her displays in the event had been disappointing up to now.

But she posted an impressive three under par round of 71 to pip Scotland’s Heather MacRae (Archerfield Links) by one shot.

Ladies European Tour player Lydia Hall  (Hensol Golf Academy) was third after carding a one under par round of 73.

Now Daws, a former Kent Girls Champion, Kent Schools Champion and Kent Ladies Champion of Champions.  hopes that this result will give her the chance to challenge for the WPGA Order of Merit.

“In this year’s events so far, I hadn’t been starting that well,” explained Daws who spends much of her time at Etchinghill Golf Club coaching youngsters.

“I’ve been practising during the winter in hitting my targets, and at Three Rivers I started doing that. This was a lot better.

“I was pleased with how I played, there were a lot of good golfers out there in this event.

“The conditions were quite good, it was a bit cold but we didn’t have strong winds to contend with.”

Daws made three birdies in the first five holes and, despite some blips on the back nine, she did enough to finish top of the leaderboard.

“The plan at the start of the year was to challenge for the Order of Merit so this result gives me something to build on,” she added.
