Stephen Gray left it late to grab a share of the spoils in the Arnold Clark Tartan Tour’s 18-hole Order of Merit Sprint event at Crow Wood near Glasgow.
With his Lanark club-mate Graeme Greer holding the clubhouse lead on a five-under 66, Gray, playing in the very last group of the day, made a dash for the line with his own 66 to ensure that honours were even.
Greer, the 22-year-old who has posted a couple of top-10s on the domestic scene this season, had set a robust standard and his neatly assembled card was bolstered by a telling thrust of five birdies in a row from the eighth.
It looked like that would be good enough to earn an outright victory but former Tartan Tour No 1 Gray, with a third and a second in his last two outings, had other ideas.
Despite playing his first seven holes in two-over, the 47-year-old mounted the kind of charge that should have been accompanied with a bugle call and covered his last 11 holes in seven-under to grab a £575 share of the prize fund.
The leading Lanark duo finished a shot ahead of Erskine’s Chris Currie, host club pro Ian Graham and former European Tour winner Alastair Forsyth.
The Sprint series continues on Friday at Dumfries & County before attention turns to the Kerr Investments 36-holer at the Dumfries & Galloway club over the weekend.
