Austria-based Martin Dewhurst won the Gloucester and Somerset PGA medal at frozen Weston-super-Mare, an event reduced to 16 holes and played to a Stableford format to beat the forecast of snow.
Ironically Dewhurst returns to Bristol for several months each year as the Worthersee/Velden Golf Club in Austria is closed each winter because of the weather.
He mastered the bouncy conditions with six birdies in a two-under-par round worth 34 points, 21 on the back nine. A feature was a run of four consecutive birdies from the 13th.
Runner-up Ed Goodwin (Cirencester), winner the previous week at Minehead, also managed 21 points on the homeward run as the duo shared the sweep.
He finished one behind and the only blank was at the ninth when he found a ditch from the tee. But he was later boosted by an eagle at the 13th and a birdie at the 17th.
Wheathill’s Mark Singleton enjoyed his best finish of the season on 32 points, and third shared with Enmore Park amateur Matt Kippen. Lee Corfield (Burnham & Berrow) and Mark Sanders (Knowle) were a further shot back.
