Richard Dinsdale was heading for the low round of the day after making his sixth birdie at the 12th hole in the sunshine in the opening round of the Dudsbury Masters.
The Parc Golf Academy player made gains at the second, sixth, seventh, eighth, tenth and 12th in the third Order of Merit tournament this season, supported by Ringwood Brewery. Then he was pegged back by three successive bogeys. He repaired some of the damage with birdies at the final two holes.
His five-under-par 66 brought him level with Michael Watson (Wessex Golf Centre) who had assumed the lead half-an-hour earlier. The Dorset man birdied the first two holes and added two more at the sixth and eighth. He dropped shots at the ninth and 13th with birdies at the 12th, 15th and 17th.
Adam Frayne (Yelverton), who recently tied fifth in the Powerade PGA Assistants’ Championship at Coventry Golf Club, lies one shot off the pace going into the final 18 holes. He signed for 67 after making five birdies at the sixth, tenth, 15th, 17th and 18th with one bogey at the short 11th.
Danny White (Players Golf Club) made a sensational start and was four-under after four holes following birdies at the first and fourth and an ace at the 146-yard second played over water. Although the man from Swindon added a second eagle at the par-five tenth, he dropped five shots and carded just two further birdies in a real mixed bag.
He was joined on 68 by Paul Jones (Canford Magna) and Kevin Harper (Sidmouth) who each made five birdies and dropped two shots. Paul Hendriksen (Dinnaton Golf Club), winner of the Bournemouth Festival at Dudsbury last year, carded six birdies and three bogeys for his 68.
Richard O’Hanlon (St Kew) contributed the only blemish-free round of the day making 16 pars and two birdies in 69. Cennydd Mills (Pyle & Kenfig), Barry Forster (North Wilts) and Ross Langdon (South Cerney) joined him to share eighth.
Pre-tournament favourite and course winner Matt Dearden (Llantrisant & Pontyclun) seems out of contention after 76. Order of Merit winner Liam Bond (Marriott St Pierre) shot 70 as one of 17 players under par who could threaten the leaders.
