David Dixon gained his first win of the year in the Gloucester and Somerset PGA medal at a very cold and frozen Cirencester.
Because of the sub-zero conditions the format was adjusted to stableford scoring, with the Enmore Park player accumulating 35 points to beat Giuseppe Licata (Bristol Golf Centre) by one shot.
The temperatures dropped so low the course was firmer than the nearby bypass which passes close to the venue and solid greens reduced the scoring to a lottery.
Dixon had actually gained some recent experience of the frozen conditions as two days earlier he had played a few holes with his coach Kristian Baker, who is based at Wentworth.
He made three birdies at the seventh, eighth and 17th along with two bogeys and a double bogey on the 13th. Licata also carded three birdies at the second, sixth and 16th as well as making five bogeys.
Ian Brown (Newent) and host pro Ed Goodwin shared third on 33. David Haines (Burnham and Berrow) was the final prize-winner on 31. Former PGA in England and Wales (South West) champion Brown, who is back after a long injury lay-off, claimed the birdie sweep with four. Goodwin won the over 40’s sweep.
Licata extended his lead in the race for the Total Triumph Order of Merit title over his nearest challenger Goodwin.
