Enmore Park’s David Dixon mastered some tricky conditions to win the Gloucester and Somerset PGA Medal at Burnham and Berrow.
The former European Tour winner beat captain Daryl Kelley (Filton) and vice-chairman Ed Goodwin (Cirencester), carding a level-par round of 71 on his way to a three-shot win.
After opening with three pars Dixon rattled off five birdies in his next six holes to reach the turn in four-under-par. This was despite making a bogey at the sixth where his second shot spun off the green into the swale close to the hole and he took three more to get down.
The homeward run proved difficult as some devilish pin positions put a premium on accurate approach play.
A few showers dampened the 33 strong field although the wind was lighter than usual.
Kelley followed up the previous week’s runners up spot at Minchinhampton. The highlight was an eagle two at the 16th when a 100-yard wedge found the hole, but outright second eluded him as he dropped shots on the closing two holes.
Goodwin made three birdies without a bogey on the front nine but then shed six shots over the next five holes before a steady finish gave him a share of second place.
Kevin Pitts (Mendip) also reach the turn in red figures with the wind at his back but dropped three shots at the short 14th, although 75 was good enough for solo fourth spot.
G&S PGA chairman and former Burnham assistant Andrew March (Brean), vice-captain Pat Baker (Mendip Spring), with his best performance of the campaign, and Total Triumph Order of Merit leader Giuseppe Licata (Bristol Golf Centre) shared fifth on 76.
