David Dixon carded a five-under-par 65 to win the second Gloucester and Somerset PGA medal of the season at Brean Golf Club.

The Enmore Park man made seven birdies to beat Giuseppe Licata (Bristol Golf Centre) by three shots.

The ever-improving layout at Brean certainly prompted careful management to master small greens and evade many water hazards. But, despite another excellent autumn day for golf, scoring was not as good as expected.

Early starter Dixon picked up birdies at the third and fourth before the ball ended out of bounds as he attempted to drive the fifth green and he carded a double bogey.

But the birdies flowed at regular intervals at the eighth, 10th, 12th, 14th and 15th so he topped up his winnings by claiming the birdie sweep.

Surprisingly only two other players broke par. Licata started slowly but his final ten holes were improved by an eagle at the 14th with birdies at the ninth, 10th and 18th.

He edged out host pro Andrew March by one shot, who had spent the previous two days in hospital with his son. He also made a slow start and was two over after four holes. But six birdies, along with a sprinkling of bogeys, helped him return a sub-par score for the second medal running.

Matchplay runner up Nick Ellis (Naunton Downs) posted 71 on his first visit to Brean to share fourth spot with Roy Holland (Long Ashton) and also take the Over 40’s sweep.
