Enmore Park’s David Dixon opened the Gloucester and Somerset PGA winter season with a two-shot success at breezy Brean on the North Somerset coast.
He beat home professional Andrew March with a return of one-over-par 70 on a day of higher-than-average scoring in the windy conditions,
Although Dixon’s day started badly when his opening drive vanished over the green he swiftly repaired the damage by following with a birdie, adding others at the eighth and ninth. He shed shots at the 15th and 16th holes over the tougher back nine before he chipped in for a birdie two at the penultimate hole to claim the birdie sweep.
March also struggled at the start of his round and dropped three early shots. He picked up his only birdie at the ninth. Roy Baker (Worlebury), who played some of his amateur golf at Brean, used this knowledge to post 73 for third place.
Courage matchplay champion George Ryall (Worlebury) collected the Over 40’s sweep and shared fourth with Daryl Kelley (Filton), Martin Liley (Wheathill), Robin Goodey (Chipping Sodbury) and Alex Munro (Bristol Golf Centre) on 74.
