Former European Tour winner Stephen Dodd completed a Welsh double by adding the South Wales PGA championship to the Welsh National title he claimed for the fourth time at Royal St David’s in July.
Now 48 and looking forward to a new career on the European Senior Tour, the Barry-based former European Open champion carded three-under-par 67 at Cardiff Golf club to finish one shot ahead of Richard Dinsdale (Parc Golf Academy) with Joe Ferguson (Celtic Manor) the only other player to better par on 69.
Ryder Cup man Phillip Price, the other European Tour winner in the field, and former West Order of Merit winner Matt Dearden (Llantrisant and Pontyclun) shared fourth on level par.
Dodd’s success was founded on a run of four birdies in five holes from the fourth. His only dropped shot came at the par three 17th.
He is now going to the Middle East for a month to play tournament golf and is considering a return to the European Tour School.
Despite inconsistency because of playing inactivity Adam Constable (Cardiff) won the birdie sweep with five in his five-over 75.
Dinsdale’s display earned him place in the South Wales team to represent the area in the South West regional qualifier for the SkyCaddie England & Wales Inter-County Championship at Woodbury Park on September 23.
He is joined by regional chairman and Order of Merit winner James Lee (Caerphilly), who finished sixth alongside Brian Lee. Kevin Davies (Virginia Park) claims the third place.
The final of the £10,000 Inter-County Championship takes place over the PGA National course at The Belfry on October 14–15.
Dinsdale also won £200 credit from sponsors Asbri as the company’s leading account holder.
