Former PGA champion Scott Drummond won for the first time in a PGA in England and Wales (South West) pro-am with a round of two-under-par 70 in the inaugural event at Point of Polzeath in North Cornwall.

But his only blemish, when he lost a ball on the par-five 17th hole which cost him a double bogey, meant he shared top spot with fellow Plymouth resident James Ruth who has been producing class golf in recent weeks.

Drummond, 42, won at Wentworth in 2004 during his European Tour career. More recently he has played in West regional fixtures with variable success. But he hit top form at Polzeath and was four under par after making his fifth birdie with a four at the 15th.

But he could only draw level with Ruth, who finished nearly an hour earlier after picking up three shots in his last 11 holes following  bogeys at the fifth and seventh. Ruth won his third regional event three days earlier in his previous outing at Exeter.

Four players share third, among them Richard Sadler (Killiow) who also made seven on a par five. Paul Hendriksen (Ivybridge) also missed the chance of claiming third outright when he dropped his only shot at the last.

Stuart Little (Minchinhampton) played his last six holes in three under while the impressive newcomer Dan Toogood (Weston-super-Mare) also carded a steady 71 with two birdies and one bogey.

Little’s team of Steve Breckon, Sara Beavan and Annie Norman won the team prize on 84 points. Drummond led Stuart Kirbride, Chris Kirbride and Nigel Sloggett into second on 82 with Sherborne pro Jon Bevan’s Total Triumph team of Oake Manor’s Neil Mossman, Lee Ayres and Polzeath member Alan Meneer third on 80.

In view of the great success of the day, the enthusiasm and support of the club members, owner Jeremy Davies, who has invested heavily in a club formerly known at Roserow, plans another pro-am next year.
