Donal Gleeson (Old Conna) and Brian Doheny (Rathsallagh GC) shared the spoils in the opening event of the PGA Winter Series in association with Cobra Puma Golf at the European Club.
The pair edged Pat Gerrity (Druids Glen) into second place by a single shot on a day when wet and windy conditions made low scoring very difficult.
In that context, Doheny's level par back nine of 36 was a superb effort and worthy of first place.
Out in four over 39, with dropped shots at the second, fourth, seventh and ninth it was going to take something special to get into the hunt but he responded to the challenge on the back nine collecting a birdie at the 13th and marking in just one dropped shot at the 18th.
Gleeson was steady on the front nine, with a birdie at the par four fourth, offset by dropped shots at the third and seventh to go to the turn in one over 36.
However, he stumbled at the start of his back nine, dropping shots at the 10th and 12th. He managed a birdie at the par three 14th but further dropped shots at the 16th and 17th saw him home in three over 39.
The next event in the series is at Laytown and Bettystown on Friday 16th January. Timesheet 9am-11am.
