Dylan Ross on building global golf success through innovation and technology

27/02/2025

With a coaching career spanning over 25 years, and with spells working at some of the most prestigious private clubs around the world, Scottish-born PGA Advanced Fellow Dylan Ross’s services have long been in high demand.

Here, Ross shares how he became a key figure in creating successful elite junior coaching programmes in Mexico, training Mexican PGA Professionals, and establishing his own academy in Florida, Golfusion. This state-of-the-art facility takes a holistic approach, helping players develop both their physical and mental skills.

What attracted you to working overseas in the first instance?

My international journey began in Mexico, where I became a Mexican PGA Tour Member in 1990. I was drawn to the incredible opportunities to make a real difference in golf development, particularly in emerging markets. When I saw the chance to help implement Mexico's first coaching certification programme as Director of Education and Training for the PGA of Mexico, I knew this was where I could create lasting impact.
The opportunity to work at prestigious venues also appealed to my desire to experience golf at its highest level and learn from different golf cultures and teaching methodologies around the world.

What qualities do you think got you your first oversees job and subsequent roles, over local candidates?

I believe my commitment to continuous education and professional development set me apart. I pursued multiple high-level certifications, including TrackMan University and various Titleist Performance Institute certifications. My competitive playing experience, including winning the Mexican PGA Championship in 1993, gave me credibility as both a player and coach. Being bilingual – I also speak Spanish – opened many doors, allowing me to work effectively across different cultures.

The British PGA's National Scholarship recognition and my progression through the PGA Excel programme to 'Advanced Fellow' Coach status demonstrated my dedication to excellence in the field. But perhaps most importantly, I brought a track record of innovation and results, whether it was revolutionising junior programmes or implementing new technologies. My ability to develop players and show tangible results, like helping 14 student athletes secure Division 1 university golf scholarships, proved that my methods worked regardless of the location.

How did you begin the journey of setting up Golfusion and Dylan Ross Golf and what were the biggest challenges and hurdles you had to overcome?

My vision for Golfusion in West Palm Beach was to create something truly unique - a state-of-the-art 5,000-square-foot facility dedicated to holistic golf development. I wanted to build a place where technology and traditional coaching methods could work hand in hand.

I integrated everything I'd learned from my international experience – from radar and 3D motion technology to the mental game aspects that I'd developed working with elite players.

With Dylan Ross Golf in Mexico, I focused on revolutionising junior golf programmess, implementing cutting-edge training technologies at premier facilities. My experience working with the Mexican national team and understanding of the local golf culture helped me create programmes that resonated with the community, leading to an 80% increase in junior participation.

The journey wasn't without its challenges. Setting up the facilities at Golfusion required significant investment in technology and infrastructure. I had to ensure at every piece of equipment, from our TrackMan 4 and iO simulators to the Zen Green and Swing Stages, would contribute to our golfers' development in meaningful ways. Building a qualified team that could deliver on my vision for holistic golf development - combining technical skills, mental resilience, and physical conditioning - took time and careful selection.

How do you see the academy developing in the years ahead?

I see the academy continuing to evolve with a strong focus on innovation and community. We’re always exploring new technologies and expanding our wellness programmes to offer a more holistic approach to golf. This includes not only the technical and mental aspects of the game but also physical conditioning and recovery, which are essential for long-term success.

As part of this vision, we’re also looking to expand our reach globally by enhancing our online presence and virtual coaching capabilities. This will allow us to offer our unique approach to golfers around the world, setting new standards in comprehensive golf education. We’ve brought in Global Golf Consultant Jason Hall, a fellow British PGA Member, to help guide our business operations, and with the great team we’re building, we’re very excited about the future.

How is the GB&I PGA qualification generally viewed in the States?

The GB&I PGA qualification carries significant weight in the US market. It's known for its rigorous standards and comprehensive training in both technical and management skills. Having this qualification has helped establish my credibility and opened many doors in the American market. In fact, I may be one of the very people that have secured a Green Card on two separate occasions. I am sure this was mainly due to being a GB&I PGA Member and the awards.

What impact has PGA Excel had on your career development?

Achieving Advanced Fellow status through PGA Excel has given me access to invaluable educational resources and industry networks, positioning me as a thought leader in the field. It's helped me stay current with industry developments and apply cutting-edge insights in my coaching, which has been instrumental in enhancing both the academy's offerings and my personal career growth. I am now often contacted to present at seminars and as a guest coach at other facilities.

What advice would you pass on to other PGA Members who may be interested in working in the United States?

My advice to other PGA Members looking to work in the United States is simple: build a strong support network, embrace innovation, and truly understand the local golf culture. The US is a big, diverse market, and it’s essential to surround yourself with people who can help you grow – whether that’s through mentorship, partnerships, or local connections. Without a solid support system, breaking into the market and establishing your brand would be far more challenging.

In today’s world, the integration of innovative training tools and technology is a must. Don’t just follow trends — be ahead of the curve. Use advanced technology like TrackMan, 3D analysis and wellness tools to enhance your coaching and offer something unique to your clients. Golf coaching is evolving, and wellness is becoming just as important as technique. By blending mental, physical, and technical elements, you can create a more holistic experience for your students.

Also, never underestimate the value of offering a personalised service experience. Whether it’s in person or through virtual coaching, people want to feel seen and understood. And don’t forget that knowing a second language, like Spanish, is incredibly useful, especially here in the US. It opens doors to a wider range of students and communities.

Ultimately, what sets you apart is your ability to provide real value to your clients. Focus on building your unique expertise, keep learning, and always strive to elevate the client experience. With the right mindset, tools, and support network, the opportunities are endless.
