Celtic Manor’s Joe Ferguson gained his second win of the year at Torquay after early-season success at Sherborne.
An impressive five-under-par 64 left Richard Woods (Dainton Park), Richard O'Hanlon (St Kew) and Lee Thompson (Dudsbury) trailing by three shots over the Devon course.
Ferguson threatened to post an even lower score. The former West Assistants’ champion who joined the Ryder Cup resort four years ago after an outstanding amateur career as an England international playing off plus four, was in dynamic form.
An eagle three at the 12th took him to six under after birdies at the second, fourth, ninth and tenth. But he stuttered for the only time with a double bogey at the 14th, partially redeemed by his fifth birdie at the 15th.
Woods made five birdies, O’Hanlon three after dropping a shot at the opening hole and Thompson, fresh from his Order of Merit win at Dudsbury, also made three with a solitary bogey.
James Ruth (China Fleet) and Tim Baker (Celtic Manor), in his best display of the season, were the only other players to better par on 68.
Russell Berry (Professional Golf Europe) led the winning team on 14-under-par 124, two better than Michael Watson (Wessex Golf Centre).
James Pickard (Honiton) claimed third place on countback from Baker and Richard Dinsdale (Parc/Asbri) on 128.
