Cirencester’s Ed Goodwin started the New Year by winning the first Gloucester and Somerset PGA Medal at the Minchinhampton Old Course.

He defeated his close Total Triumph Order of Merit rival Giuseppe Licata (Bristol Golf Centre) by one shot after a five-under-par 66 crowned by two eagles over the traditional opening venue of the calendar year.

The majority of the 21 players found conditions heavy going and tricky to score but the leading pair had no problems. Goodwin recorded equal halves of 33 with a par, eagle start being replicated in the closing two holes as well.

In between he picked up his other shots at the fourth, sixth and 12th with his only blemishes coming at the 14th and 15th played into the stiff breeze.

The leading duo always contend strongly in both dual-county medals and in the annual regional pro-am over the common course. A year ago Licata started with six consecutive birdies. This year he opened with four.

Following six pars and a double bogey six at the 11th he birdied the 13th, bogeyed the 14th and completed his day with birdies at the final two holes to share the birdie sweep with Goodwin.

Despite his win Goodwin only conceded the minimum of points to Order of Merit leader Licata who maintains a sizable lead.

Filton’s Daryl Kelley and Forest Hills amateur Jamie Dick shot 69 to tie for third while Enmore Park’s David Dixon was only the fifth player to better par with 70.
