Ed Morton (EM Golf Studio) fired seven birdies and an eagle as he roared to the summit at the PGA East Anglia Open.

Morton shot a six-under-par 66 to take the halfway lead at the sixth of seven Order of Merit tournaments in the East. He has a two-shot advantage at the top from Mitch Kierstenson (Penfold Park).

And yet his round got off to a dismal start with a bogey at the opening par-four. Morton soon set the record straight, finishing his front nine at one-under-par before the fireworks really began.

He made at eagle at the par-five 10th and a birdie at the 14th triggered a storming finish. Indeed, he picked up a stroke at four of the closing five holes – including the last.

On a day when the morning starters benefitted from easier conditions, Kierstenson played some immaculate golf. He birdied four straight holes from the third on his way to a well-crafted 68.

That’s a stroke ahead of a cluster of no fewer than nine players, so everything is set for a fascinating second day’s play.
