Windermere Golf Club’s Simon Edwards has set his sights on a fourth PGA Cup appearance after winning the Titleist & FootJoy PGA Professional Championship North West qualifying event.

Edwards topped the leaderboard with a three under par round of 69 at Cheshire’s Delamere Forest Golf Club to pip Scott Jackson (Disley Golf Club) by one shot.

The pair will join 11 other qualifiers the £91,500 Grand Final which will be held at Burnham & Berrow Golf Club in Somerset on June 2-5.

And Edwards admitted he is a man on a mission this year.

He wants at least one more crack at the USA when the GB & Ireland team travel to California for this year’s meeting in September.

But he is keen to play this time as fellow Welshman Jon Bevan is captain.

“I’ve played in three PGA Cups - and I still think I’ve got one or two more left in me,” said Edwards.

“So if I win at Burnham they’ll have to take me won’t they!

“Anyway, it’s been 14 years since I won the PGA Professional Championship, that’s too long.

“I spoke to Jon Bevan at the back end of last year and told him that I wanted to play for him in California.

“We chatted while playing for Wales at the European Team Championships in Turkey.

“I’ve been friends with Jon for a long time,

“So I’m playing more this year with that target in mind and for Jon.

“It’s going well, so far but we’ll have to see what happens in the final."

Edwards finished fourth in the Grand Final and played in the 2011 team that went to CordeValle later that year.

He was also part of the winning PGA Cup team in 2005 at The K Club

But he admitted that he had to do the hard work of qualifying for the final first.

“It was a case of getting the job done,” said Edwards, head professional at the Cumbria club.

“But it wasn’t easy out there.

“I know the course well, but when you get to my age you know most of them!”
