Ian Ellis (Great Yarmouth & Caister) countered bogeys with a stack of birdies as he surged to success in the Hendon Pro-Am.

By his own admission, the Norfolk ace experienced an up and down round. But he shook off dropping shots at three of the opening five holes to put together a fine five-under-par 65 to top the field.

In total, Ellis mustered birdies at no less than nine holes, including both the 17th and 18th. They helped him finish one clear of Luke Goddard, whose solitary dropped shot came at the 16th.

Ellis said: “My scoring was mainly down to solid iron play and it was nice to finish the round off in style by hitting my approach to the 18th to three foot.”

Ellis, who works closely with Alex Lucas (Ipswich Golf Centre) and sports psychologist Dan Abrahams, is now gearing up for a big few weeks.

He is scheduled to tee up at Wentworth in the BMW PGA Championship and then the Titleist and FootJoy PGA Professional Championship at Burnham & Berrow.

Ellis said: “I’ve got some really exciting weeks ahead, so now is the time to crank up the effort and work hard.”

James Ruebotham – third to Ellis – led the successful team, whose 126 tally was three clear of the next best.
