Christopher Evans contrived to make life difficult for himself in winning the PGA Midlands Assistants Order of Merit #1 at Shifnal Golf Club.

Evans, from Wishaw Golf Club, was seemingly coasting to victory after opening up with two birdies en route to reaching the turn in four-under.

Similarly, when he recorded two more birdies at the 11th and 15th to go six-under, claiming the £225 winner’s cheque appeared a formality.

However, three successive bogeys on the final three holes that resulted in him completing the par-71 course in three-under almost proved costly.

Fortunately for him, the remaining members of the 37-strong field were unable to take advantage.

Coventry Golf Club’s Sam Dodds proved his closest challenger but he had to settle for second place after failing to build on a high octane start that saw him post four birdies in the first six holes.

Dodds, who finished one stroke adrift of the winner, earned £140 while Nicolas Lister (Direct Golf Ltd) and Jack Lynch (Tapton Park) were rewarded with £117.50 each after tying for third place.

For Lynch, who was runner up in the Midlands Q School #1 at Stonebridge Golf Club, that meant a second pay day in five days.
