Lifelong Cleobury Mortimer resident Rob Grier is set to return to his roots and take up the head professional position at his home-town golf club.
Grier will be combining the role with his current position at Stone Driving Range in Staffordshire which he has held since 2011.
The two facilities are situated just an hour apart and Grier's close relationship with the Pain family, the owners of Cleobury, made him a natural choice to take the recently vacated role, alongside assistant Sam Pain.
Pain, PGA qualified in 2013, has been Grier's assistant at Stone for the past year and will also be performing a dual role, combining his time teaching at both centres. Stone boasts one of the largest independent golf shops in the region with a dedicated custom fitting swing studio onsite too, facilities that the Shropshire club and their members are already benefitting from.
Grier said: “The link between the two centres is good for both parties. Cleobury is such a good society venue that we’re actively sending business over there from Staffs and in return the Cleobury members are coming over here to be custom fitted.”
From a personal point of view he's relishing the chance to coach in the traditional style once again.
“It'll be nice to be able to combine range coaching with a bit of old school, back on a golf club practice ground in all elements, something I really enjoy,” he explained.
“I know a lot of the members at Cleobury, I went to school with many of them so the transition has been very smooth.”
Grier has also added a third member to the Cleobury coaching team. Young Amy Millward turns pro next year and will do her PGA training at the club. Already level one qualified, she will be helping to coach lady members, juniors and beginners.
