Two eagles helped Celtic Manor’s Joe Ferguson win the Sherborne pro-am in an impressive round of four-under-par 68.

Eagle threes on the sixth and 11th plus three birdie threes and a two on the 15th brought a slender success over Lee Corfield (Burnham & Berrow), Ross Whitelock (St Mellion), Sion Bebb (Morlais Castle) and Richard O'Hanlon (St Kew).

Bebb made an even more spectacular eagle when he holed a sand wedge at the last. O’Hanlon played his final shot in semi-darkness as the last player in the 36-team event backed by Still Materials Handling.

Ferguson, the former West assistants champion who joined the Ryder Cup resort four years ago after an outstanding amateur career as an England international playing off plus four, gained his last win at Raglan Parc in August.

Matt Dearden (Llantrisant & Pontyclun) and Ryder Cup man Phillip Price were other Welsh players to make an impact by shared sixth with Mark Wiggett (Dudsbury) on 70.

The PGA in England and Wales (South West) captain Barry Sandry (Broome Manor) made two vital birdies as he led home trio Carl Broomfield, Mike Sandy and Matt Sandy to victory in the team event on 85, winning on back six countback.

They headed the Giuseppe Licata-led Bristol Golf Centre team of Mark Morgan, Phil Donkin and Ian Gay on the back three countback who beat Bebb’s team of Paul Browne, Adrian Foster and Matt Lazenby from the host club.

Home player Tony Lawrence (South West Signs), Ben Christey-Clover (All Stars) and Dinsdale’s Still team also carded 85.
