Last man on the course Adam Frayne (above) could afford to drop one shot on his final hole and still achieve an outright victory in the prestigious Remedy Oak pro-am in the heart of the Dorset countryside.

But instead the Yelverton player became a victim of the 185-yard par three ninth hole after setting off on the 10th in the two-tee start. The stream to the left of the two-tier green is often a card-wrecker as it is below a steep bank. He stood on the tee at five-under-par with a two-shot lead. But he made a double bogey five.

So, for the second successive year, he was obliged to share top place - last year with Cheltenham’s Russell Berry and this year with man-in-form Lee Thompson (Dudsbury).

The Dorset player was first off and, after a mixed bag of an eagle at the fifth, five birdies, seven pars and four bogeys, signed for three-under 69. Frayne made five birdies and 12 pars over the opening 17 holes.

Visiting South region players James Ablett (Lee-on-The-Solent) and Freddy Valenti (Poulton Park) shared third with Kevin Harper (East Devon) on 70.

Three other visitors, Kevin Saunders (Brokenhurst Manor), Adam Hickling (Stoneham) and Kevin Garwood (Golf At Goodwood), joined James Ruth (China Fleet) in sixth as the only other players to better par on 71.

Matt Dearden (Cardiff) won the team section on the five-star day sponsored by Kitchen Elegance. His Total Triumph team of Neil Mossman, Lee Ayres and Paul Spackman returned 87.

Thompson’s Body Consultancy trio of Mark Caudle, Kevin Poore and Kevin Pelling finished a further shot back. They won on countback from Parkstone Golf Club’s team of ladies, Annie Penfield, Lindsay Blaver-Mann and Lorraine Gorman, led by the club’s professional James Baldwin.
