Chris Gill has achieved his first success in the Cornwall Professional Golfers’ Alliance since becoming club professional at Newquay Golf Club in the summer.
The former PGA Cup player, who was previously based at Exeter Golf and Country Club, shared top spot with Andy Welch (Whitsand Bay) and Grant Slater (Trevose) in a field of almost 100 players at West Cornwall.
Conditions were very tough with squally showers and a very strong wind which was reflected in the scores. The winners only managed to card 28 stableford points over the par 69 links course near Lelant.
Nick Rogers (Falmouth) and Richard Sadler (Killiow), whose chances of winning disappeared when he drove out of bounds on the final hole, shared fourth on 27.
The pairs results were also very close with last nine countback deciding the minor placing. Slater and Martin Nicholas (Lanhydrock) claimed first prize on 35 points to beat Gill and Carl White (Newquay) and amateurs Spike Drew and Jack Mewton (Truro) by one point.
