In his first event since taking over as the new Devon PGA captain Alistair Welsher led from the front as he defied freezing conditions to win the medal over Saunton’s East course.
The Tiverton head professional’s driving accuracy was the key to a round of four-over-par 75 in testing conditions for his first Devon PGA triumph. A one-shot success left home assistant professional John Morgan, Woodbury Park assistant Tom Jessamine and Exeter professional/manager Ben Martin tied in second.
Paul Hendriksen (Ivybridge) returned from helping England finish third in the PGAs of Europe Team Championship at Belek in Turkey, to share fifth with Tom Hanson (Tiverton) and Neil Holman (Torbay Golf Centre) on 77
Bogeys, doubles and worse abounded as none of the leading players managed more than two birdies. Morgan, in fact, managed none. But his eagle three on the 15th was a feature of the day.
