Dan Carter (Upavon) claimed his first solo victory with a par round of 69 in difficult conditions in the Titleist-Footjoy Young Professionals League at Radyr.
His only other success was in the Teign Valley Fourball championship partnered by fellow Wiltshireman Barry Forster (North Wilts).
This time, as a late starter, he had to battle against a strengthening wind. He made birdies at the second, eighth, 11th and 13th but twice made successive bogeys.
Tom Bowen (American Golf, Cardiff) seemed to be heading towards a sensational low round after making four birdies over the first eight holes at the first, second, fifth and eighth. But suddenly everything went wrong. He dropped five shots coming home although his start was good enough to share second.
Jack Wallace (Thurlestone) also returned 71 but his round was completely different. He started badly by shedding three shots at the first two holes. But showed great resolve to steady his round with three birdies and only one further bogey.
Forster, Joe Vickery (Newport), Ben Martin (Exeter) and Joe Ferguson (Celtic Manor) shared fourth on 71.
Home player Christian Askins, partnered by Radyr Golf Club president Alan Vaterlaws who plays off 13 won the betterball with 42 points. They finished one clear of Bowen and amateur Steve Jones with Martin and Mike Gorman third on 40, beating three pairs on countback.
