Former Midland Order of Merit winner Richard O'Hanlon (The Point at Polzeath) and Michael Watson (Wessex Golf Centre) won for the first time this summer with five-under-par returns of 67 in the Rotary Club of St Austell event at Carlyon Bay.

O’Hanlon (pictured) invariably plays well in his adopted county and his three wins last year came in the Duchy at Tehidy Park, St Austell and Falmouth.

Watson, once a prolific winner, has enjoyed a slowish season. But he was in spectacular form at the clifftop seaside course, making eagles at the fourth and 13th birdies at the seventh and 10th and dropping just one shot at the 14th.

O’Hanlon made the worst possible start by dropping shots at the first and third. But he was quickly back to his immaculate best with a flurry of seven birdies in 12 holes from the fourth.

Andy Beal (Salisbury & South Wilts) started with a birdie, dropped shots at six and seven, but rallied with five further birdies from the eighth to finish one shot behind in third for his best pro-am finish of the season.

Russell Berry (RB Golf Range) shared third, making an eagle at the 10th, three birdies and one bogey at the ninth.  Grant Slater (Trevose) was the only other player to break par on a sweltering day, claiming fifth on 69 over the course he played as an amateur.
