Fourth-generation PGA member Simon Fitton has outlined his pleasure at becoming the organisation’s East region captain for 2020.
The director of golf at Thorpe Wood and Orton Meadows began his year in office on February 12.
Fitton was handed his captain’s blazer by regional chairman Mike Few at Bishop’s Stortford Golf Club, the base for the PGA in England (East).
The captaincy is recognition of Fitton’s commitment to the PGA, especially his work within the East.
He has served as the PGA in Bedfordshire & Cambridgeshire secretary since 2014 and joined the East region committee in 2017. Last year he was invited to become Few’s vice-chairman.
Fitton said: “As a very proud PGA Member, I am delighted to be taking over the captaincy.
“Throughout the year I hope to talk to as many fellow members as I can, continuing the goodwill of the association.
“I am a fourth generation PGA member following Walter Fitton (Glossop), Dennis Fitton (Pontefract, Walsall & Thorpe Wood) and Roger Fitton (Walsall & Thorpe Wood).
“Naturally I am a very proud member of the association and am very pleased with the developments of recent years as we adapt to the challenges of modern times.”
Fitton, 40, joined the PGA as a trainee in 2002, attached to Thorpe Wood Golf Course in Peterborough. He qualified in 2006 and became director of golf at Thorpe Wood and Orton Meadows in 2010, overseeing an interesting portfolio for Nene Park Golf.
Fitton explained: “We have two separate public golf courses (Thorpe Wood and Orton Meadows), a two-tier driving range and a pitch and putt. We have three full time PGA coaches who deliver coaching to all levels.
“I am very lucky to run such progressive golf facilities and we have been able to adapt to changing market conditions over the years.”
