An eagle three at the 492-yard fifth hole helped St Mellons assistant Toby Hunt share top place with home professional Martin Stimson in the South Wales PGA event at Ashburnham.

This was the third of five successive threes made by Hunt, winner of the Marston’s PGA in England and Wales (South West) Assistants’ title last year.

He moved to six-under-par with another a birdie at the par-five eighth but dropped a shot at the ninth to be out in 31.

He birdied the par-five tenth but dropped shots at the 12th and 13th to finish on four-under-par 68.

Stimson, who has spent his life playing the course, made birdies at the first, second, fourth, fifth and eighth to also be out in 31. His only blemish came at the 429-yard 17th where he took five.

Former European Tour winner Phillip Price, who is keeping his game in trim before he challenges for the Seniors Tour, also eagled the fifth and was one shot behind in third with James Lee (Caerphilly) the only other player to break par on 70.

Newport Links PGA Professional Alun Evans and his 11-handicap amateur partner Peter Griffiths won the betterball with eight-under-par 64.
