David Fleming (pictured on right) wants to turn Prestwick Golf Club’s success off the course into victory on it at the Golfbreaks.com PGA Fourball Championship next week.
The club’s head PGA Professional will team up with colleague and senior assistant Nicky Sinclair (left) for the £28,750 BMW-supported final, which will be held at Forest Pines Hotel and Golf Club in Lincolnshire on October 2-4.
And Fleming is proud of the recognition that the famous Ayrshire club - the birthplace of The Open Championship - has already gained this year.
They were awarded ‘best club shop’ by Europe’s leading golf retail services group, the TGI Golf Partnership.
“That was a nice achievement for all of us at the club,” said Fleming. "Some might say it’s a bit corny, but everyone’s been talking about it that’s for sure.
"Because of the history of the club, a lot of people come here looking for something to take home with them. A lot of our stock is branded and our award was based on that as well as the way it was presented.
“It’d be nice to mirror the achievement on the course, so myself and Nicky will be giving our best at Forest Pines.
“I’ve never made the final before so it’s a good thing for us.”
Fleming admits he will also be playing for pride at Forest Pines.
He added: “I’m representing Prestwick and the head professional’s job has a certain prestige to it. I’m only the seventh person ever to hold the post in the club's history.
“Myself and Nicky are used to playing in individual events, but we came together for the qualifying event at Musselburgh and shot six-under-par so we’re playing well.”
Other Scottish teams playing at Forest Pines include: Richard Clark (Bruntsfield Links Golf Society) and David Broadfoot (Dumfries & County); Anthony Mackrell (Playsport Golf) and Scott Catlin (Greenburn); Mark Loftus (Mearns Castle Golf Academy) and Simon Payne (Cowglen); and Craigielaw’s Jonathan Porteus and David Laing.
