A former Exeter City striker is looking to hit the back of the net and secure a place in the Lombard Trophy final at Gleneagles.
George Robinson, who played for the Grecians’ reserve team until he was 19 years old, is set to tee up in the regional final of Europe’s largest pro-am alongside his Exeter PGA Professional Gary Milne at Bovey Castle on July 6.
Should the duo win at the Devon venue they will secure a place in the £80,000 championship final over Gleneagles’ PGA Centenary Course, host of last year’s Ryder Cup, on September 1-2.
For Robinson, a 24-year-old personal trainer who plays off a handicap of three, the event offers up the chance of a second golfing final in two years having finished fourth in the EGU gold medal at Woodhall Spa 12 months ago.
“That was an amazing experience, it was just like playing in a European Tour event,” he recalled.
“To have qualified for this so soon afterwards is amazing, I played well in the club qualifier and finished on two-under - I’m feeling good about my game.
“I know Gary well, he fitted my clubs for me and I’m looking forward to playing alongside him at Bovey Castle.
“It would be the best experience ever if we could get to Gleneagles – it would be amazing.”
Robinson first got into golf when introduced to the sport by his father, but really took to the game once he decided to stop playing football and focus on his career in fitness.
“Since I stopped football golf has really taken over as my main sport,” he explained.
“My dad first got me into the game, he played a lot of golf and was keen for me to give it a go, and I really enjoyed it.
“I’ve always loved my sport, and as well as football and golf I used to sprint too.
“But now, when I’m not working, my focus is on golf and I’m hoping to top this year off with a trip to Gleneagles!”
