Former PGA Cup player Chris Gill defied the miserable drizzle and windy condition to continue his playing revival this season with an outstanding win at Tehidy Park.

The Newquay club pro who won the Dudsbury Masters in June shot three-under-par 68 for a three-shot advantage over another former PGA Cup man Tony Nash (Porthpean), Richard Sadler (Hayle Golf Range) and James Ruth (China Fleet).

He started with three successive birdies from the second to be out in three-under 32. His only bogey at 12 was swiftly followed by his fourth birdie as he eased ahead of the field. It was Gill’s fourth success of the summer and he again showed his liking for Tehidy where he has been runner up twice in recent years.

The annual pro-am in memory of the club’s late professional Jack Gale was sponsored this year by Kim Piner's Winners Recruitment.

Ruth, who has played only occasionally in the West this summer, was at his most adventurous. He made a double bogey at the fifth, carded four birdies in seven holes, then dropped four successive shots from the 12th before chipping in for an eagle two at the 16th.

In contrast Nash posted three birdies and dropped three shots while Sadler picked up two shots and dropped two.

Form players Michael Watson (Wessex Golf Centre) and Richard O'Hanlon (St Kew) – runners up in the Golfbreaks Fourball Championship - Order of Merit leader Ashley Mansell  (Clevedon) and Weymouth winner George Ryall (Burnham & Berrow) shared fourth.

Gill made it a double by leading in the winning Datson Consulting team of Nick Datson and county players Charlie Phillips and Tom Fox on 85. Sadler’s Walters and Barbary team of Bob Cope, Peter Simmons and David O’Mahoney were second four shots behind. They beat Mullion’s  Chris Ramsden and amateurs Mark Twynham, John Fox and Richard Fox on countback.
