Nathan Gilpin defied some of the worst weather of the summer to post an solid four-under-par 67 and achieve his first professional win at Trethorne.
Although the sun shone, gale-force winds blew several leading players off course and Gilpin, a former Devon amateur from Torquay, rushed to three-under par after birdies at the third, sixth and seventh.
Dropped shots at the tough par four 11th and 15th checked his progress but further birdies at 14, 16 and 18 brought a three-shot success.
Gilpin is attached to Torquay Golf Club where he first started playing. He is taking an Applied Golf Management Studies degree course at Birmingham University.
He is now on placement at Royal Porthcawl where he is devoting his time to preparing the club and course for the Welsh Seniors’ Open Championship this month.
Richard Sadler (Killiow), often the leading player in Cornwall, shot 70 with five birdies and four bogeys to claim second.
Katie Rule (Tehidy Park), once a star in Cornwall amateur golf, shared third spot with James Ruth (China Fleet) and Richard O'Hanlon (St Kew) on level-par. Three successive birdies from the sixth were the highlights.
Ruth made two birdies and two bogeys. O’Hanlon probably produces more pars than any other player in the West. He started with 14 before finishing bogey, birdie, bogey, birdie.
Rule helped her trio win of Emily Joy, Cameron Kenworthy and Ashley Jackson the team prize on 12-under-par 130. Mark Searle (High Post) led the main sponsor’s Premier Carpets team of Andrew Wilson, Fred Champion and Bill Danks into second on 132 while Sadler’s group of Kim Mundy, Dennis King and Peter Risely came third a further shot behind.
