Glos Somt Regain Haines Cup

Paul Gravell captained his Gloucester and Somerset PGA team to victory over Devon PGA at the Players Club’s over his home courses in the annual match at his home club.

After suffering heavy defeats in the last two matches the home team regained the Haines Cup 9.5 to 5.5. The overall score is now 3-3.

Two debutants James Hannam (Bath) and Luke Gaskins (Brickhampton Court) set up victory by beating Hendriksen brothers, Dan and Paul, by two holes in the opening match of the foursomes played over the Codrington layout.

Ed Goodwin (Cirencester) and Ashley Mansell (Clevedon) beat Tom Jessamine & Kevin Harper 6 and 5, Daryl Kelley & Pete Garratt lost to Ryan Pope & Will Nolan-Farley 8 and 7, Andrew -March & Roy Baker beat Ali Welsher & Harry Mayers, 5 and 4 while Gravell & Robin Goodey (Chipping Sodbury) overcame Rich Woods & Duncan Arnold 4 and 3.

Devon faced a tough task in the singles played over the Stranahan course after losing 4-1. Once again the top matches all went in the way of the home team but Devon hit back well in the closing games. .

The top three of Goodwin, Mansell and Gaskins all won their games to take G&S to the brink of victory and that was assured when match five was claimed on the home hole by Hannam.

Captain Gravell completed an unbeaten day for himself with a win in the penultimate game before the final game involving March was declared a half with the match already decided.

Singles: Goodwin bt D Hendrksen 2 and 1, Mansell bt P Hendriksen 2 and 1,Gaskins bt Harper 2 and 1, Kelley lost to Pope 4 and 3, Hannam bt Tom Jessamine 1 hole, Garratt lost to Harry Mayers 3 and 2, Baker lost to Nolan-Farley 4 and 2, Goodey lost to Woods 4 and 3, Gravell beat Ali Welsher 4 and 3.March-Arnold halved.
