In the week an 11-year-old captured the headlines at the US Women’s Open, 94-year-old Peter Sprawson (above left) flew the flag for senior golfers by scooping the spoils in the professional’s day at Coventry Golf Club.

The nonagenarian scored an impressive 41 points to fare slightly better than Lucy Li who missed the cut on her debut at Pinehurst No.2.

Sprawson’s impressive feat comes 18 months after scoring a hole-in-one on the Midland club’s fifth hole and newly appointed head PGA Professional Martin Sutliff (right) was delighted for the ex-soldier.

“It was my first professional’s day event, attracting 175 golfers and ended up being won by our oldest member which capped a great day,” said Sutliff who succeeded Dr Phil Weaver following his recent retirement after 35 years at the club.

“Peter is a super guy and still plays three times a week so it just shows that age really is no barrier when it comes to golf.”

Sprawson won an electric trolley for his efforts and has also seen his handicap come down from 24 to 22.

Coventry Golf Club recently hosted the Powerade PGA Assistants’ Championship which was won by Gareth Davies.
