Golf sceptic sees the light with help of PGA pro

A Cheshire-based PGA Professional has earned glowing praise for her coaching skills after helping a golfing cynic get hooked on the sport.

Natalie Adams from High Lec Golf Club has been instrumental in giving golf convert Jayne Moston a new lease of life in sport – despite the beginner admitting she had previously seen golf as something to take up when she was ‘old and decrepit'.

However Moston has changed her tune having gained her first taste of golf with Adams at the Cheshire resort through group taster sessions run by the PGA backed England Golf Partnership’s Get into Golf campaign.

The former county swimmer, swimming coach and tennis player had for years resolutely declared golf as a no-go zone, turning a deaf ear to the pleas of her partner – an avid golfer – to give it a go.

“My partner has been trying to get me into golf for years, but my retort has always been when I’m old and decrepit I’ll play golf, till then you’ll find me on the tennis court or in the swimming pool,” she said.

But, having completed her first course at High Lec, and embarked on a second course of low-cost coaching, plus making a raft of new friends through golf, Moston is happy to admit just what a great game it is.

“I am so hooked, I can’t believe it! It’s been amazing,” she said. “It’s been wonderful to go out and start a new sport from scratch at my age. It’s been a fantastic incentive to get up and do something for myself.

“The social side is a big bonus and I’m thoroughly enjoying the whole experience.

“High Legh is an incredibly friendly club and everyone has made us feel so welcome. I’ve always thought that golf was cliquey, but it’s been the complete opposite.”

A key catalyst in helping her enjoy golf has been the expert coaching from Adams, whose skills highlight The PGA’s vision of Right Coach; Right Place; Right Time.

“I can’t praise Natalie enough, she’s been incredible and she explains it all so well,” said Moston.

“It has definitely helped to start in a group – we’re all the same standard, at the same level and working towards the same goal. It makes it all so much easier.

“The game itself is so challenging – and there’s no-one to blame but yourself! But you can hit one great shot and think ‘wow!’ It’s such a buzz, it makes you feel fantastic.”
