Golf returns to the Isle of Man at Castletown Links

To many the Isle of Man is a playground for those thrill seekers that have a need for speed when the Manx TT comes around every summer to the Island, but amongst all the speed is an extraordinary Island that caters for the needs of many audiences.

Located in the Irish Sea with tradition of giants and fairies, equidistant between England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, lies an island that is home to one of the world’s finest links courses, Castletown Golf Links.

Designed by Old Tom Morris and dating back to 1892, the course has commanding views of the Island from all points and is surrounded completely by the Irish sea. Although golf is played above sea level this is as true a links test as competitors will find anywhere around the World.

2020 will see the return of tournament golf to the Isle after almost a decade, with Castletown Links set to host a two-day pro-am that is set to create one of the standout events in the calendar.

“It is fantastic to return to the Isle of Man,” commented Jonathan Paine, Regional Manager PGA North. “For many years the Manx Classic as it was known then was a focal point on the Regional calendar with many teams and Professionals returning year after year.

“It’s fantastic that after a lot of hard work and discussions with Johnny and the team at Castletown, we are able to bring an event of this magnitude back on to the Isle, and I look forward to seeing our members, this time on a national scale, participate over this fantastic links course”.

Castletown Links has one of the most scenic and challenging finishing stretches of any course and is sure to provide drama worthy of an event of this calibre.

Paine continued: “A trip to the Isle of Man offers something unique on the schedule for 2020 and I’m sure players of all abilities will enjoy the challenge of the golf and the amazing views every hole brings.”

The event itself will be titled the Castletown Links Championship and will be played over 36 holes with a practice round. The Championship is being held in support of local charity ‘Forget Me Not Isle of Man’ and following the final round all players will attend a top-quality dinner event at heritage estate, The Nunnery, in Douglas.

Johnny Evans, (Castletown Links), added: “We are extremely excited to be launching this event in 2020. It is a step along the road towards bringing Castletown Links back to its very best. Our recent recognition as being back within GB&I’s Top 100 golf courses confirming we’re on track.

“We’re highly grateful for the support of some key sponsors and are delighted that the Championship can also benefit a brilliant cause in Forget Me Not Isle of Man, a charity supporting dementia sufferers.”
