Johnny Grace, a Somerset county amateur from the host club, won the Gloucester and Somerset PGA medal at Saltford with the only under-par round of the day.
His 67 left Ed Goodwin (Cirencester), George Ryall (Worlebury) and another amateur Matt Kippen (Enmore Park) trailing two shots behind on level par 69.
But Goodwin, who made three birdies and three bogeys, was able to profit by Order of Merit leader Giuseppe Licata’s failure to make an impact and is now only just behind him in second spot.
Fog delayed the start by 30 minutes and Ryall had dropped five shots by the 15 th hole. But he finished eagle, birdie, birdie, birdie. Grace made three birdies and an eagle at the 16 th. Kippen also started slowly but produced four birdies.
Assistants Martin Liley (Wheathill), who posted six birdies to collect the birdie sweep, and Luke Gaskins (Brickhampton Court), shared fifth.
West chairman Andrew March (Brean) produced the third hole in one of the winter season using a four iron at the par three 198-yard yard fifth hole on the winter layout to collect the accumulated Hole in One sweep pot.
