Kent PGA captain David Green and his family are going the extra mile to raise funds for the Lily Foundation to help fight mitochondrial disease.
The Wildernesse head PGA Pro, wife Becky, and sons Zach (8) and Olly (5), are hiking up Mount Snowdown and back down again, a walk of nine miles.
Such is their determination to do this all on foot, they’re not even contemplating taking the world famous Ffestinniog train back down.
Green confesses that he and the other adults are prone to vertigo, but this is the least of their challenges.
“Our biggest challenge is going to be the two boys,” he said.
“Both the boys are super fit – Zach plays sport every day and will want to run all the way, while Olly being younger will, once he’s tired, want to sit down, so he may have to go in a rucksack and I’ll carry him on my back!
“We’re doing this walk with two other families but although I’ve been involved with fund raising for this charity at my previous club, the idea of walking up and down Snowdon was mainly Becky’s. She’s done the Race for Life breast cancer event twice in the last two years, and is very motivated when it comes to issues like mitochondrial disease as it affects children
“We chose to do it for the Lily Foundation as it’s this year’s captain of Wildernesse Mark Roy’s selected charity.”
Roy has, like so many that become involved with the campaign to fight mitochondrial disease, a personal connection with the charity due to his three year old nephew having the disease.
Every 20 minutes a child is born who will develop mitochondrial disease by the age of 16, and there is no cure for this debilitating and life limiting disease.
Founded in 2007 following the death of his eight month old niece Lily, Jonathan Pierce established The Lily Foundation, which is committed to finding a cure for Mitochondrial Disease through funding research, raising awareness and family support.
