The first-ever graduate from The PGA in Scotland’s Modern Apprenticeship programme has set his sights on becoming a fully qualified PGA Professional.

David Grindell, 19, completed the course under the watchful eye of PGA Professional Mel Douglas (left) at Inverness Golf Club and has now decided to further his studies by enrolling on the PGA Foundation Degree Programme.

He is the first student to complete the course, which was established last year in partnership with Galvin Green, WL Gore and the Sports Academy of Scotland.

“I came out of college and wasn’t sure whether to turn pro or not, so Mel had a word with me about the apprenticeship,” Grindell explained.

“I was already working at the club part time, so it was really good of him to offer me a full time position while I completed the programme.

“I really enjoyed it and it has left me in no doubt that I want to pursue a career in golf. It’s been a really nice stepping stone onto the foundation degree.

“I’ve now just started my first year of the degree, and while the work is harder than what I did before, I feel that it has given me a really good grounding.”

The apprenticeship was such a success that PGA pro Douglas, who has been attached to Inverness since 1980, is now seeking a new apprentice to undertake the programme.
