Guerin kicks off Titleist & FootJoy Winter Series in style

World of Golf’s Grant Guerin shot an impressive four-under-par 67 to win the first event of the new season’s PGA South Winter Series, supported by Titleist & FootJoy.
Collecting his winner’s cheque for £500, Guerin produced a masterly back nine of 33 around Hankley Common Golf Club to edge past the man who was leading at the turn, PGolfCoaching@Pedham’s Adam Clough. But as the leading Trainee, Clough took home the highly prized Titleist and FootJoy ball, glove and shoe contract, along with the £400 second prize.
“I love playing Hankley Common and although the weather was very wintery-ish, the course was in fantastic condition and the greens were ideal,” said Guerin.
“I’m delighted to have opened my account with a win in the new Titleist & FootJoy PGA South Winter Series, especially as there are several more top class courses in the schedule.”
Starting at the 10th, Guerin made a clumsy bogey at the par five 13th but then delivered three birdies at the 14th, 15th and 17th before managing to drop another at the 18th, his ninth, to be out in one-under.
Clough on the other hand was sailing along, and while he bogeyed the 12th, he made four birdies to the turn to be out in three-under-par 32. But on their back nine, it was a different story again, and while Clough repaired the two bogeys at the fourth and seventh with a terrific eagle at the eighth, his back nine of par meant he finished on 68.
Guerin started his back nine with birdies at the first and second and then the fifth, and while he dropped a shot at the signature seventh hole, he bounced straight back with another birdie at the eighth, finishing the nine in 33 shots for his impressive 67.
On two-under-par came the trio of Jon Barnes (Lee-on-the-Solent), Jordan Godwin (Barnehurst) and Elliot Groves (Romsey), all shooting cards of 69 for their cheques of £278 each.
The next Winter Series event is at Littlestone on the Kent coast on November 28, followed by events at Prince’s, The Berkshire, Swinley Forest, The London and Farnham in 2017.
