PGA board member David Haines recovered from an early triple bogey with a series of monster putts to win the Gloucester and Somerset PGA medal at The Kendleshire.
The victory, which he shared with Cirencester’s Ed Goodwin, was Haines’ first in the county since he was named head professional at Burnham and Berrow.
He posted a one-under-par score of 70, helped by sensational putting that brought six birdies and inevitably the birdie sweep prize money.
He and Goodwin also shared the Over 40 (Cirencester) in what is traditionally the largest field of the season.
Haines produced one of his best performances of the year. He opened with a birdie three but followed with a bogey four and triple-bogey eight. But further birdies at the fourth, seventh and eighth brought him level. A 60-foot putt at the tenth and another birdie at the 13th maintained the momentum.
Goodwin has been in steady form so far this season and made an eagle at the eighth and birdies at the 9th and 13th being offset by three bogeys. He moved into third spot in the Total Triumph Order of Merit.
It would have been a three way tie but for a momentary lapse by Clevedon assistant Ashley Mansell. After a stunning approach shot to the closing hole from a fairway bunker over the lake he failed to convert the short putt.
In the lowest scoring trio of the day Mansell’s playing partners Andrew March (Brean) and Nick Ellis (Naunton Downs) shared fourth on 72. So G&S PGA chairman March regained the lead in the Total Triumph Order of Merit from Giuseppe Licata (Bristol Golf Centre) who was off form.
